REVIEW: Vidunder - s/t

"Fuck yeah, der nächste große Wurf aus dem 70ies Rock-
Exportland #1 Schweden", denkt man sich, wenn man die 
Platte das erste mal auf den Teller legt. Bei den ersten

Durchläufen denkt man sofort an Graveyard, Witchcraft und co., deren Einfluss natürlich absolut unbestreitbar. Aber je länger man die Platte hört, desto mehr fällt einem die Eigenständigkeit der Jungs aus Örebro auf. Die ersten 3 Songs fliegen einem sprichwörtlich um die Ohren: treibende Drums , rifflastige Gitarren (die man sich doch an der einen oder anderen Stelle wenigstens ein klein wenig verzerrter wünscht) und ein eingäniger Gesang hinterlassen sofort einen bleibenden Eindruck. Vor allem "Into Her Grave" lässt sich hier als Song besonders hervorheben, der, nebenbei gesagt, das Potenzial besitzt, zu einem Szene-"Hit" zu werden. Erst danach offenbaren VIDUNDER ihre ganzen Songwriting Qualitäten: ein ruhiges, düsteres Stück, "Threefold", durchzogen von rhythmischen Finessen, folgt auf dem Fuße. Gänsehaut Stimmung! Danach drücken die Jungs gleich wieder ordentlich aufs Tempo. "Summand och Bortglömd" entpuppt sich als, an manchen Stellen an MC5 und andere Detroit Größen erinnernde, Garage-Rock Nummer. Der erste von drei Songs auf der Platte, der schwedische Lyrics hat, daher werden die meisten von uns über die genaue Bedeutung dieser Nummer wahrscheinlich nur mutmaßen können. Die Band hat uns in einem Interview allerdings den Hinweis gegeben, dass sie zu vielen ihrer Songs von Natur und Literatur inspiriert wurden.

Auf Seite 2 angekommen geht die muntere Achterbahnfahrt weiter. Während "Asmodeus" rockt als gäbe es kein Morgen, wird man bei "Beware the Moon" sofort wieder zurück auf die Couch geholt. Unglaublich gefühlvoller Song, der sich, wie vieles auf dem Album, nicht gleich beim ersten Mal durchhören offenbart. Selbiges gilt für "Fire", der allerdings etwas geradliniger daherkommt als sein Vorgänger. "Threat From The Underground" ist wieder deutlich intensiver, besonders der geniale Mittelteil des Songs haut einen jedes mal wieder aus den Socken. Super Rhythm Section, gepaart mit Garagenriffs. "Your Ghost" startet atmosphärisch und entwickelt sich dann recht bald zu einer schnellen, variationsreichen Rock-Nummer, die VIDUNDER im letzten Song des Albums hervorragend auf den Punkt bringen: 70ies Rock, interessantes Songwriting, mal düster, mal kompromisslos und mit dem richtigen Gespür für langsame, gefühlvolle Stücke.

FESTIVAL REVIEW: Keep it Low

Keep it Low Festival:

When Elektrohasch Records celebrates their 10^th anniversary, you can´t stay at home. So we packed our bags and went to Munich, we've been looking forward to a day with 15 Bands on 3 Stages.

The Location is called “Feierwerk”, a really nice place with 3 Stages and a small outdoor area.

After our arrival, we got informed that Rotor cancelled their show. Not the message you want to read, but that bad message had something good in it, Colour Haze decided to play a second 45 minute long show.

The first band, Parasol Caravan from Austria, started early at the “Orange” Stage, but it was a great start into this heavy day. With their merciless Stoner/Heavy Rock our neck muscles had a 40 minute work out, but this was just the warm up. Read more about Parasol Caravan in our category “Bands you should know”!

After this awesome show we needed a short pit stop at the bar. Because of the overlapping stage times on the 3 stages and the beers, we missed a lot of Orcus Chylde. A 70s inspired Psych-Prog-Rock band from Germany. But when Hellroom Projectors started, we've been in the front row. Ok, this wasn't that hard, because the “Hansa 39” stage, the biggest one, was not that crowded this early. The Hellroom Projectors are a Stoner Metal band from Switzerland, with heavy riffs and a dark voice.

Mother Engine, are one of the newcomer bands of 2013. Since their camp site gig at the Stoned from the Underground Festival this year, they are well known, at least in Germany. We hope to see them soon in Austria. A lot of stonerheads entered the “Kranhalle” stage to see Mother Engine and they didn't get disappointed. A rifftastic instrumental stoner, with great speed changes and low tones from both drum and bass that felt like a massage to your body.

After these awesome shows, we decided to take a little brake outside, where we met old and made new friends. I don´t know how it happened, but we missed The Machine, shame on us. So whats the next band now? Colour Haze! The first of two shows they played that day, and it was amazing, even though Philipp was a little ill, he made a great job.

Then we missed My Sleeping Karma, because the “Kranhalle” stage was so full, they closed it. Btw.: MSK played with David (from The Machine) on the keyboards.

If you've ever been at a Truckfighters gig, you know how it is: loud, hot and with lot of Fuzz in the air.

The day before we've seen them in Austria supported by Parasol Caravan, but you never can get enough of their great show. Oskar and Niklas jumping and running on the stage, it´s a one hour power workup for both of them and for the crowd, you can´t stand still and just watch, you have to move till you are dehydrated.

Truckfighters

After a really short brake we walked to Grandloom. I saw them once in Austria and knew they are great, but this gig was unexpectedly good! One reason, why I was positively surprised, was the new drummer. After the exhausting Truckfighters show, Grandloom was really perfect! I laid back and enjoyed this awesome instrumental stoner rock. Sometimes psychedelic, slow and suddenly a hard “Karma to Burn” wall of sound with breaks in the most unlikely moments.

So, the last band for this awesome day – how else could it be – was Colour Haze, for the second time! They started their set with “She Said” from their latest album and as a surprise with a guest musician from Austria. Our friend Robert Schossleitner, drummer from the recently splitted band Been Obscene supported them on stage with percussions. The rest of the show was amazing, with a video wall on the back and a great setlist:

All in all it was a great day, with lots of music and awesome people. The only sad thing was that we couldn't see all the bands we wanted to see, because the stage times overlapped or it was too crowded. But you know that in advance, when you buy a ticket for a one day festival with 15 bands on 3 stages.

Band #7 Parasol Caravan

Parasol Caravan crank their amps up to 11 and play heavy rock with stoner and psychedelic elements. They are a dirty soundbastard with never ending groove, fat guitar riffs with no mercy for your neck and incredible whiskey soaked vocals that get under your skin.
Since the end of 2009 the four piece is rocking as many stages as possible and honoring their idols of the past without losing touch with the modern rock scene.

In the past 3 Years they played alot of shows, with bands like My Sleeping Karma, Asteroid, Greenleaf, Cojones and many more.

Today they release their new 7" Singel - New Stone / Supernova. And they celebrate their release show with the mighty Truckfighters in Linz. Tomorrow they will play at the Keep it Low Festival (we will make a Festival Review, so stay tuned!)

Album Review

Es handelt sich hier um eine Split-CD von Stonerbirds und Stangala.

Sowohl Stonerbirds als auch Stangala kommen aus Frankreich und lassen uns gespannt nach Westen blicken welche Sounds uns da erwarten.

Stonerbirds eröffnen die Kreiz-Breizh Session mit einem Reigen an Gitarrenwänden deren kraft mich auf Anhieb begeistert. Über 5 Songs erstreckt sich ein sehr psychedelisches und doch sehr druckvolles Werk wie aus einem Guss. Solides Handwerk auf allen Positionen und Spielfreude prägen die erste Hälfte dieser Split-CD.

Stangala überraschen sofort mit einem für dieses Genre ungewöhnlichen Sound. Ein Saxophon! Oh ja das gefällt mir! Das französisch gesungen wird macht für mich die Sache nicht unbedingt gewöhnlicher und es gefällt mir noch mehr! ;-) Spätestens bei Beginn des zweiten Titels haben Stangala mich völlig in ihrem Bann gezogen und überraschen Song für Song immer mehr. Von Noiseelementen bis zu Samples ist alles vorhanden was das schräge Hirn verlangt. Auch hier werden die Instumente und Vocals hervorragend bedient.

Band #6: FAR AWAY TOWN

The "pioneers" of the Austrian Stoner Rock scene? We don´t know it exactly, but Far Away Town are probably the oldest, still playing Stoner Rock Band from Austria.

In the Beginning 2004 - 2006 Far Away Town released only one Demo EP (2006 - Into Desert Demo). 

They had some problems with their Band-Lineup, but in 2009 they decided to play as three-piece, and it was a good decision!

Their unique style as a hybrid of stonerrock, desert blues, heavy rock, a load of fuzz and - of course - psychedelic parts is reflecting there influences of several heavy sounds.

No time to Looose:

Always heading forward, this stonerrock - trio released one demo CD, 2 EP's, one 7" single split EP and a live record. Currently the band is working on their debut full length album, which will be released 2013/14.

Far Away Town played more than 100 shows so far including one italia/sardinia-summer-tour and a load of support shows for no less than Brant Bjork&the Bros, Truckfighters, Dozer, Brain Police, Sungrazer, The Machine, Deville and many more.

Neadless to say, these guys are comin´ up with heavy riffs and desert sounds - always headin´ for the real fuzzz.

Fragen und Antworten:

1. Warum gab es zwischen 2004 und 2009 nur eine Demo CD?
In der Anfangsphase( 2004-2006) der Band gings uns in erster Linie darum, Live zu spielen. Nach der ersten EP (2006 - Into Desert Demo) hat sich das Band-Lineup mehrere Male geändert und wir hatten eine Zeit lang keinen fixen Drummer. So haben wir erst 2009 unsere zweite Scheibe (Quicksand) aufgenommen.

2. Warum gibt es euch seit 2009 nur mehr als Trio?
Anfang 2009 ist Mario (Drums) dann fix in die Band eingestiegen. Herr Kepp (Bass) allerdings aus. Nach wenigen Proben zu dritt (Mario - Drums, Alex - Git/Vox, Christoph - Bass) haben wir großen Gefallen an der neuen Formation gefunden und beschlossen als Trio weiter zu machen.

3. Seid ihr die älteste Österreichische Stoner Rock Band? (also ich finde keine die es vor 2004 noch gab! bzw keine die es noch gibt!)
wir sind alt, ja ...ob wir die ältesten sind kann ich nicht sagen...

4. wie war die Stoner Rock Szene in Österreich als ihr angefangen habt? war sicher schwer mit gigs?
Eine Szene gabs nicht wirklich. Da war eine handvoll Bands die weitestgehend Stoner Sound machten. Gigs waren sicherlich schwieriger zu kriegen als jetzt, wo es doch eine recht lebendige und aktive stoner-clique gibt.

5. Es gab mal die Meldung, dass ihr einen Italienischen Vertrag abgeschlossen habt. Was wurde daraus und ist das noch aktuell?
Wir haben von einem kleinen italienischen Label ein interessantes Angebot für unser kommendes Full Length Album bekommen. Da wir aber zu diesem Zeitpunkt grad erst am Anfang des Songwritings waren, haben wir nach einigem Hin und Her entschieden uns noch nicht vertraglich zu binden um ohne Zeitdruck an das neue Album heranzugehen. Wir arbeiten zur Zeit intensiv am neuen Material und werden, sobald wir abschätzen können wann die Aufnahmen fertig sein werden, die Gespräche wieder aufnehmen. Das ganze ist etwas voreilig auf Facebook raus gegangen, zu einem Zeitpunkt wo wir die Sache noch nicht so ganz durchgedacht hatten...

 BAND #5: Torso

Torso ist eine psychedelic Band aus Österreich.
 
Gegründet wurde Torso 2009 in Wien, damals noch als Trio (Thomas, Michael und Florian) unter den Namen „Montezuma“. Im Winter 2010 verließ Florian (Schlagzeug) die Band. Kurz darauf, im Frühling 2011, kamen Klaus (Schlagzeug) und Bernhard (Gesang, Gitarre) dazu – TORSO war geboren!

Die Jungs sind definitiv geprägt von Rockmucke aus den 70er Jahren und sie sind nur schwer in eine Schublade zu stecken. Neben Jazz, Kraut Blues Rock kann auch Stoner Rock als musikalischer Einfluss genannt werden.

Haunting Witches:

Für die Texte finden die jungen Musiker aber auch Inspiration außerhalb der Musikwelt, zum Beispiel in der Literatur oder Natur.
Die Vielseitigkeit der vier Burgenländer zeigt sich schon auf ihrer Debut EP „Inside“ (Mai 2012). Jede Menge psychedelic rock, gepaart mit fuzzigen Riffs und Gitarrensolos. 

 Room:

 
Zurzeit wird fleißig an einem neuem Album gebastelt, welches bei einer Deutschland Tour, Anfang des nächsten Jahren bereits mit im Gepäck sein soll. Geplant ist auch eine Mini-Release-Tour durch Österreich. Da man die neue Platte natürlich auch dem heimischen Fans präsentieren möchte.

Noch im Oktober kann man Torso live auf der Bühne erleben. Unter anderem supporten sie die Legenden Pentagram in der Arena Wien.

BAND #4: The Øresund Space Collective

What you should know:
The Øresund Space Collective was formed in April 2004. The collective is a group of Danish, Swedish and American musicians that get together as often as possible for free form improvised space rock music. The flavour of the music is different with each session. The jams can often combine complex interplay between guitar and synthesizer as well intense drumming and bass playing.
Genres like funk, jazz, reggae, space and stoner rock are combinated to a great Jam

The collective is recording all of the jam sessions and makes them available to fans via the webside in MP3 format. They currently have over 40 hours of material for free download.

 Øresund Space Collective is back with a new studio album, the band´s 16^th release. The line up on this recording session included Mogens and DR. Space on synthesizers as it has been on all the releases as well as all the members of the Danish band Pair (Kristoffer- Drums, Nicklas- Guitar, Christian- Bass) In addition, Pär from the bands Sgt. Sunshine, Carpet Knights, Hoofoot played bass. The line up was completely by American guitar player Daniel Lars.

Walking on Clouds Part 1 & 2:

It doesn’t take long to realise that this album will go for a journey to space with you, but before you will get there, you will find yourself „walking on clouds“ for over 25 minutes. Great atmospheric melodies, with a spaced out synthesizer sound. It´s the first Øresund Space Collective Session with Daniel Lars on Guitar. “Walking on clouds” is based on a idea from Daniel and the other guys jammed to it. Sometimes, the guitar playing of Daniel reminds me of early Pink Floyd songs. The whole Album is heavily guitar dominated.

The Second Part is spacier, more synthesizers and some psyched out parts.

I think this would be the soundtrack if you are really walking on clouds.

Carlos on the Moon:

When “Carlos on the Moon” starts you know where the journey will bring you...far away, to a guy named Carlos. In this nearly 17 minutes the song will bring you on a really relaxed level. The synthesizers sounds like a windy autumn weather, so it create a perfect atmosphere for looking out of your window thinking about the world.

Neptune Rising:

Neptune Rising is the last track on this over 45 minutes long space trip. It starts faster and more hectic than the other songs. A track with really crazy acid parts in it. The end is the opposite to the intro of this song, its a long synthy fadeout.

Colour Haze

"Wir arbeiten an der Wiederveröffentlichung unserer alten und zum Teil lange vergriffenen Alben.

Ich habe begonnen Los Sounds De Krauts in unserem Studio neu abzumischen und bin selbst überrascht welch enorme Verbesserung der Klangqualität der alten digitalen Aufnahmen über unser feines Analog-Equipment doch herauszuholen ist. Ich eile jedoch mit Weile, es geht Stück für Stück voran und wird noch einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen. Nächste Woche werden wir zudem das Remastering der Ewigen Blumenkraft – von der leider die Mehrspuraufnahmen nicht mehr vorhanden sind – in Angriff nehmen. Diese wird relativ bald im Herbst erscheinen. Bei CO2 und Periscope müssen wir noch die Daten sichten und sehen, ob eine neue Mischung möglich ist oder ob auch hier nur ein Remastering erfolgen wird. Entgegen der ursprünglichen Planung wird es keine Box geben, sondern alle Alben werden jeweils einzeln nach Fertigstellung als CD und auf Vinyl erscheinen. Das Artwork wird angepasst oder z.T. geändert, so dass die teuren originalen Sammlerstücke ihren Wert nicht verlieren.

Es wird keine limitierten Auflagen geben!

Ich plane zudem ein Album mit Live-Aufnahmen vom Duna Jam und eines mit Stücken, die nur auf Samplern, Sonderformaten oder gar nicht erschienen sind zusammenzustellen. In den kommenden Monaten kommt also Stück für Stück viel neues Altes von Colour Haze."

"Ich hatte ja zum 10-jährigen einige Wiederveröffentlichungen angekündigt. Nun ist es auch hier, wie bei dem alten Colour Haze Material gar nicht so einfach an Master und Coverdaten heranzukommen – aber aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben. Ab Oktober werden erst mal diese seit längerem vergriffenen LPs noch einmal aufgelegt:"

Band #3: Golden Void

You can expect great music to happen when people who have known each other and played together in various bands since highschool, earning fame and renown in bands such as Earthless and Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, finally get together and make an album.
Golden Void formed in 2009 after Isaiah Mitchell (guitar vocals) moved to the California Bay Area. Together with Aaron Morgan (bass) and Justin Pinkerton (drums) and Camilla Saufley-Mitchell (keyboard) Isaiah created an outstanding debut album where their musical kindredship is apparenty with every track.

When I first heard about their self-titled I expected nothing short of awesome and Golden Void more than delivered! The album offers warm, accessible psychedelic tunes very reminiscent of the early years, think Jimi Hendrix with bit more modern and full sound, as well as the spaced out, seemingly endless solos we have come to love Isaiah Mitchell for.

On the closing track Atlantis, also my personal favourite, hauntingly calm and beautiful vocals and chorus tell of the demise of people and culture by the rising seas in form of an out-of-this-world guitar solo.

In their short band history Golden Void have left quite a mark on the psychedelic & stoner rock scene already. They have toured Europe, playing at the legendary Roadburn festival where they received a warm welcome.

Band #2: Lowrider

Lowrider is a Swedish band, formed in the mid 90´s.
They were the European answer to the Palm Desert Stoner rock scene. 

 
In 1999 they released their first EP, it was a Double Split LP with Nebula (U.S. Stoner Band formed by Eddie and Ruben from Fu Manchu!).

In 2000 Lowrider toured through Europe playing 14 gigs in 8 different countries with co-headliner Dozer! In the same year they released their debut Album “Ode to lo”.

With this Album they won the “Most Convincing Kyuss Clones Award”. Everybody thought they are working on a new album, but since 2003 it grew silent around the Band.

In 2008 Peder Bergstrand (bass, vocals) released an album with his new Band “I Are Droid” (a rock-pop band) and in 2012 they released their second album. So we feared we would never hear anything new from Lowrider but I´m glad this turned out to be wrong.

After 10 years of void they announced the Desertfest Berlin and London shows in April of 2013. But they said: “The band is not considering permanently reforming and writing new songs for now, so if you want to see us on stage, don't miss that one-off show! (Peder / Lowrider).”

So everybody thought this would just be a special gig and after the Deserfests it would be silence again. Apparently Lowrider enjoyed their Desertfest gigs a lot and to our surprise and delight they played Stoned from the Underground Festival in 2013! They already announced their first show in February 2014 in London, so there is hope Lowrider will play more shows in 2014, stay tuned!
